Wildlife Holiday in Corbett National Park, India
If you spend a holiday in the Kumaon Hills area of the north Indian state of Uttaranchal, you find one of India's finest wildlife sanctuaries - Corbett National Park. This park stretches over 520 sq km of hills and plains, with sal forests, bamboo groves and open grasslands. The Ramganga River is a crucial part of the park environment, providing a source of drinking water to all the animals, as well as a habitat for fish, otters and crocodiles.
Named after the famous naturalist and hunter of man-eating tigers, Jim Corbett, it was in this park that Project Tiger - India's tiger conservation initiative was launched in 1973.
Home to a significant population of tigers and large herds of deer and elephants, Corbett's sprawling area and varied terrain and foliage provides refuge to many different animals and birds, including rare species like the gharial, hog deer and Indian pangolin.
The best way to travel within the park is on elephant back. Jim Corbett's residence, which has been converted into a museum, can be seen nearby. Corbett national park is closed for holidaymakers from June to November. A visit to Corbett is sure to be an unforgettable Incredible India wildlife holiday.
